It is important to decide how links between the various wikis should work, even before setting them up becomes an actuality.

This section should be kept in English, so that it will not become cumbersome for the developers. Discussion should go on the talk page.

If language wikis are set up, the links between them should work the same way they do in the other multilingual projects (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Wikinews). However, there must be one extra element in Wikisource that doesn't exist in the other projects, namely a special neutral link to the original wiki here at wikisource.org. For instance, while "fr:" links to French and "de:" to German, we would also need another code (e.g. "www:", "xx:", some non-country code two/three letters) to link to the main wikisource.org without a language prefix.

The need for this derives from the fact that unlike the other wikis, the "main" domain here will not be a static portal, but rather an active website, for a number of reasons:

  1. Even if language subdomains are approved, not all languages will move to their own subdomains at once. For some it may take quite a while.
  2. Much valuable multilingual information from the beginning of the project up to now will continue to be kept here.
  3. Finally, the "wikisource.org" domain (without a language code) can retain an active value as a wiki website for the coordination of Wikisource in all languages. This is a valuable element that is missing in other projects that have moved to subdomains (such as Wikipedia).

The Main Page here at wikisource.org can and should remain a multilingual portal just like it is now.

As in other projects, there should be a simple code to use for linking between Wikisource in a specific language such as French to all the other projects in French (e.g. "w:" for Wikipedia or "n:" for Wikinews). Perhaps "s:" would be good for Wikisource?

Apparently because the Hebrew Wikisource was set up somewhat haphazardly as an initial "exception to the rule", none of these links between projects work properly on it. Care should be taken that they work in all of the new subdomains (and that they are fixed in Hebrew).

An article on a French author in any language Wikipedia should be able to link directly to the original French text in its Wikisource subdomain when needed. This is difficult to do in the current system of links.

When Hebrew Wikisource was set up it was given the "hard" link "hewikisource:" so that it can be linked to directly from any Wikimedia project. It is a bit long and sometimes cumbersome to use "hewikisource:", but it gets the job done! It would be best if a similar (but shorter!) "hard link code" could be given to each and every subdomain.

Of course, this means a lot of broken interwiki links. We'll need all the humans (and bots) we can get to fix these links.
