Note on Orthography

The basis of the orthography used in this work is recommended by the Hon. Mr. Pickering in his treatise on the Indian languages; and which employs the vowel sounds as used by most nations in Europe, as in the following examples, viz.

  • ă as in făther, făst,
  • a as in fall, fawn,
  • e as in they, there,
  • i as in machine, unique,
  • o as in hope, robe,
  • u as in rule, or like oo,
  • y as in you, or like ee.

The short sound of the vowel is expressed by the character ﬞ over each; as ĕ in met, ĭ in pĭn, ŏ in nŏt; and the nasal sounds by the cedilla; under each. The dipthongs are

  • ai as i in pine,
  • iu as u in mule.

Note: This is no longer standard Seneca orthography. If you know how to write it in standard modern Seneca orthography, please help by converting the text below.
