			The Editing team is working on an "LLM Paste Check" feature, for the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:Edit_check\|Edit Check]] system. Our question for you, as experienced editors familiar with the broad variety of local policies, is how to word the ''default'' versions of the interface messages that are shown to editors (via the translatewiki process).

			For context: the LLM Paste Check feature can detect when someone is copying and pasting LLM generated text directly into a VisualEditor edit session, because [[phab:T420258\|many popular LLMs automatically add]] specific hidden metadata. As currently designed, when LLM Paste Check detects this metadata, it will show a box warning the contributor about using a direct paste, and it will link to generic (or local) policies, and ask them to decide whether to keep the text they have pasted or to remove it. In addition to this in-edit feedback for the contributor, LLM Paste Check will also add [[mw:Edit_check/Tags\|Tags]] to all edits in which it was shown, in order to assist experienced editors in patrolling.

Our programs and strategies contributed strongly to the main challenges identified in our proposal: sustaining the user group after its revival, strengthening offline community connections, expanding activities beyond Baghdad, engaging newcomers and experienced contributors, improving content about Iraq, building partnerships, and strengthening our public communication.

A key success was moving from a mostly Baghdad-centered model toward a more decentralized community model. Arabic Wikipedia Day was organized simultaneously in Baghdad and Mosul, which helped us connect with contributors outside the capital and test local leadership in a city with strong editing potential. Later, the launch of the first Wikimedia student club at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, created a new pathway for university-based engagement and future regional expansion.

Our content-focused activities also directly addressed the need to improve representation of Iraq and the region across Wikimedia projects. Through the Wikimedia Iraq Contest, new and experienced contributors created 949 articles about Iraq on Arabic Wikipedia. The Wikidata Iraq activity added more than 580 items related to Iraqi literature, while Wiki Loves Monuments and the Kirkuk Heritage Documentation Project improved the visual representation of Iraqi heritage on Wikimedia Commons. Regional collaborations, such as Wiki Loves Sweets, Let’s Have Our Images Speak Arabic, Wikipedia Asian Month, and the Gulf marathon, also helped our members contribute beyond Iraq while staying connected to shared Arabic and regional knowledge gaps.

The fund also helped us strengthen the social and organizational side of the user group. The online 10th anniversary celebration, the in-person Wikipedia 25 celebration in Baghdad, Wikimania participation, and regular Diff updates all helped us build a stronger identity and sense of belonging. We also improved our social media presence by using videos, reels, story-based campaigns, and more consistent visual branding.

Some challenges remained. Regional security tensions affected collaboration plans with embassies and external partners. We also learned that large offline events require careful logistics, especially when bringing contributors from several Iraqi cities. In addition, while our community has strong female participation online, women’s participation in some in-person activities was lower than expected due to social and logistical barriers. This taught us that online spaces remain important for inclusion, and that offline participation needs more targeted support, especially for women and participants traveling from outside Baghdad.

Overall, the fund helped us move from “reviving” the user group toward building a more sustainable national community with stronger partnerships, better governance, improved public visibility, and clearer plans for the future.

Yes. The activities implemented during this period directly shaped our priorities for the next year. Based on our results, community consultations, and board discussions, we plan to build our next program around three connected pillars: content quality enhancement, community strengthening and expansion, and university engagement and youth participation.

For content quality, we plan to continue local contests and thematic edit-a-thons, but with more attention to improving existing content, strengthening references, and improving Wikidata and Commons contributions. The success of the Wikimedia Iraq Contest, Wikidata Iraq, Wiki Loves Monuments, and Kirkuk documentation showed that our community is highly motivated when activities are connected to Iraqi heritage, culture, cities, and notable figures.

For community strengthening, we will continue decentralizing activities beyond Baghdad. The success of Mosul activities and the national gathering in Baghdad showed that contributors from different cities want to be more involved when given support and recognition. We are therefore exploring regional representatives and local organizers in active cities, with the aim of supporting contributors where they live instead of expecting all activities to happen in Baghdad.

For university engagement, the launch of the AUIS Student Club was a major learning point. It showed that university students can become an important entry point for new contributors, especially when activities are interactive and connected to student interests. We plan to build on this by organizing more university workshops, student-focused contests, and pathways for student volunteers to continue contributing after their first training.

We also plan to continue developing partnerships with institutions interested in free knowledge. Our collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy showed that small, focused partnerships can produce strong results when there is a clear theme and measurable outcome. At the same time, we learned that external partnerships can be affected by political or security conditions, so we will balance institutional partnerships with stronger local community-led activities.

Yes. We collected different forms of feedback, including participant reflections, community discussions, social media engagement, event participation data, and direct feedback from partners and community members.

For training and outreach activities, we collected qualitative feedback from participants. For example, during Arabic Wikipedia Day, participants reflected on the value of meeting other Wikimedians in person and discovering inspiring stories from within the Iraqi community. During Wiki Loves Sweets, one contributor noted that the contest helped them discover that many traditional Iraqi sweets were missing from Arabic Wikipedia, which motivated them to write articles and add photos to Commons.

We also used community consultations to shape future planning. During the Wikipedia 25 and Wikimedia Iraq 10th anniversary gathering in Baghdad, we discussed community challenges and opportunities with members from several cities. This was followed by a community survey and a board meeting to refine the priorities for the next annual plan. We also held a dedicated meeting with Wikimedia Commons contributors to better understand their challenges and identify practical support needs.

One learning is that we need a more standardized feedback system across all activities. While we collected useful stories and activity data, next year we plan to use more consistent post-event surveys and participant follow-up so that we can better understand long-term impact.

First, connecting training directly to contests helped newcomers move from learning to actual contribution. The Wikipedia for Juniors workshop prepared participants for the Wikimedia Iraq Contest, and the She Edits Wikipedia workshop encouraged women participants to create accounts, write their first articles, and continue contributing.

Second, dividing contest prizes between newcomers and experienced contributors helped us support two groups at the same time. Newcomers felt that they had a fair opportunity to participate, while experienced editors remained motivated and valued.

Third, offline gatherings were very effective for community bonding. Bringing editors together in Baghdad, Mosul, and Sulaimani strengthened trust and helped transform online relationships into real community connections. Finally, public recognition and storytelling worked well.

Sharing participant stories, publishing Diff posts, announcing winners, and improving our social media presence helped contributors feel seen and encouraged others to join.

The grant supported important skill development at both the programmatic and organizational levels.

Programmatically, we improved our capacity to design and implement a wider range of Wikimedia activities. Our team gained more experience in organizing online and offline trainings, managing contests, supporting new editors, running Wikidata and Commons activities, and connecting activities to measurable content outcomes. The Wikimedia Iraq Contest, Wikidata Iraq Contest, Wiki Loves Monuments, and Let’s Have Our Images Speak Arabic helped organizers build practical skills in campaign planning, participant support, jury coordination, documentation, and post-activity reporting.

We also developed stronger event management and logistics skills. The Wikipedia 25 and Wikimedia Iraq 10th anniversary celebration in Baghdad was the first time we gathered Wikimedians from several Iraqi cities in one place and managed transportation and accommodation at this scale. This was a major learning experience in planning inclusive national gatherings and supporting participation beyond Baghdad.

At the organizational level, the fund helped us strengthen leadership, delegation, and governance. We appointed a second leadership role to support the Director and improve continuity in day-to-day work. The selection of User reflected our commitment to involving active newcomers and supporting gender balance in leadership. We also encouraged local leadership in Mosul and began discussing regional representatives to support contributors in different areas of Iraq.

The grant period also pushed us to improve our public communication and storytelling skills. We became more consistent in publishing Diff posts, documenting activities, and using social media campaigns. We also started using more video-based content, reels, and motion design to reach younger audiences and make Wikimedia projects more understandable to the public.

In terms of governance, we developed and published a public administration structure for Wikimedia Iraq. This includes roles, responsibilities, board structure, decision-making principles, regional coordination, and commitment to the Universal Code of Conduct. This was an important step toward becoming a more accountable and sustainable affiliate.

The main capacity area we would like to focus on next year is impact measurement and retention tracking.

During this reporting period, we collected useful numbers, participant stories, activity reports, and content outputs. However, we learned that we need a more consistent system to track participants across activities, understand newcomer retention, evaluate the long-term impact of trainings, and measure how contributors continue engaging after contests or workshops.

To build this capacity, we plan to use the Event Registration tool and Outreach Dashboard more consistently across activities.

We also plan to assign clearer responsibility for documentation and metrics collection within the organizing team. This will help us reduce reporting workload at the end of the grant period and allow us to make better decisions throughout the year.

By improving impact measurement, we will be able to better understand which activities are most effective, how to support women and youth participation, which cities have the strongest growth potential, and how to turn first-time participants into long-term Wikimedia contributors.
