Thank you for this very interesting report! I find the numbers very encouraging, actually: I think they validate the value of high-quality self-paced online training, and show that by eliminating the per-capita investment, one can reach out to thousands to attract hundreds to train dozens to retain a handful. This matches my hypothesis about the efficacy of an online-course-based "big funnel" approach to outreach.

:In terms of advertising, I posted about the course [[diffblog:2024/09/07/an-introduction-to-wikipedia-a-free-online-course-for-beginners/|on Diff]], and WMAU shared it in their members newsletter. Outside of that, there were a few shares on social media, but nothing huge. Someone from WMF social media team said they'd share my Diff post on their channels but I don't think they did as I never saw it. I'm sure there were a few random posts on X/Twitter at one point, but I can't see them now either.
:Presumably, someone shared it in December 2024 because there was an influx of new enrolments.

In the course of its office operation, the Wikimedia Foundation regularly depreciates hardware assets and is interested in donating the hardware, still in good condition and usable for another few years, to its volunteer communities to help with mission-aligned work. The laptops are generally '''between 4 and 6 years old'''. New equipment is not available through this program.


The donated hardware is provided with a fresh installation of Ubuntu Linux, and a universal power adapter, to ensure it is usable by the recipient.

* applicant must agree to identify themselves to the Wikimedia Foundation, and to sign a brief agreement stating the intent of the donated hardware.


* applicant cannot be a citizen of Iran, or appear in the United States Treasury's blacklist ("[<tvar name="1">https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/SDN-List/Pages/default.aspx</tvar> Specially Designated Nationals]"). This is unfortunately imposed on the Wikimedia Foundation as a United States non-profit, and is not a Wikimedia decision.

* A program officer from the Community Development (CD) Team at the Wikimedia Foundation (currently [[User:Asaf (WMF)|Asaf Bartov]]) reviews requests as time permits, on a relaxed schedule (probably no more than once a month) and makes decisions.

Once a suitable mode of delivery is determined, the CD officer would contact OIT to receive the hardware, and proceed to deliver it as agreed.
