Merge the rollbacker group to the patroller group?
So a random thought just came to my head—should we consider merging the rollbacker user group into the patroller user group? Currently, rollbackers can only revert edits, but they cannot edit or move pages under autopatroller protection. Additionally, there is only one non-admin patroller who is active in patrolling new pages (aside from admins).

What this proposal does is that
rollbacker
will be discontinued, and users in the
patroller
group will also receive the
rollback
user right (all previous rollbackers will be granted patroller rights). This is similar to the English Wikibooks whose reviewers (
editor
) can rollback edits and review with FlaggedRevs. Thoughts? == Marathon ==

Dear colleagues, hello! My name is S. Marchenko, I am a user of Wikimedia Foundation Russian language projects and a VRT agent. I actively edit the Russian version of Wikiquote, and recently I had the idea to hold an international marathon to improve and expand Wikiquote articles in different languages. In connection with this, I created a competition page on Meta m:Wiki Loves Quotes 2026, where you can also register your local community. I really hope you find it interesting! Currently, promotion to become an autoconfirmed user only requires waiting four days, which allows vandalism-only accounts and LTAs to vandalize (such as Boggs) and evade some abuse filters. I am proposing that we include a minimum edit count requirement such as either 5 or 10 edits. Thank you. == Should we appoint new functionaries? ==

The last time we've had local checkusers (if at all) was more than 10 years ago (way before my time), and since then, we've relied on the stewards to perform checks. If we were to have local checkusers, I would suggest having three checkusers (all appointed by community consensus, with a minimum of 25 votes), <s>and checks may be requested at the administrators' noticeboard</s>. Codename Noreste (talk) 17:20, 21 July 2026 (UTC)

:I think it's a good idea to appoint them at this point. We now have a good number of active contributors, so there's little harm in giving it a try and seeing if the minimum vote requirement can be met. If it isn't met, we can continue relying on the stewards as we have been. If local checkusers are appointed, I think it'd be better to create a separate page for check requests instead of using the administrators' noticeboard, as it would make it easier to keep a clear record and history of requests. :I agree that the real challenge isn’t about consensus on electing local CUs, but rather ensuring we have enough active participation to make the process meaningful. The lack of quorum in past attempts shows how difficult it can be to mobilize more than 15 valid voters. That said, the community has grown since your earlier discussion on the admin mailing list, and I share your hope that this time we’ll reach the necessary threshold. If we can encourage broader engagement and remind users of the importance of these elections, we might finally achieve a sustainable model for local CU selection. However, if someone has a pattern of using
suppressredirect
from a global group (and not from a local group) for any reason other than reverting page-move vandalism, an administrator may ask them to stop using
suppressredirect
only, provided they have not misused
rollback
or any other user rights. == Create a non-admin extended mover group? ==

I would like to propose that we create an extended mover user group (
extendedmover
). It would have the following user rights:
*
delete-redirect
to delete single revision redirects; administrators do not need to have that right as they have
delete
instead.
*
move
to allow moving pages; per noc.wikimedia.org, extended movers in other projects explicitly have this user right.
*
move-subpages
to allow moving pages with their subpages.
*
suppressredirect
to not create redirects when moving pages.
*
tboverride
to override the local and global title blacklists when moving pages.
Currently, only administrators have these special user rights when they access the page move interface, hence this proposal. Thoughts? == Protection on the Main Page templates ==

Currently, almost all Main Page templates, except Main Page/New pages (under semi-protection), are fully protected. I would like to suggest we lower the protection of all those templates (and increase the MP new page template) to autopatroller protection. This would allow some more users to maintain those templates while remaining protected from most users because they are considered high risk. :Main Page/New pages is the only one that needs regular updates, so I agree with making that more accessible to autopatrollers and get a greater cadence for alerting users to new pages. QOTD has its own process, not sure you'd want people to interfere with that? Some of the others I can't imagine need updating very often. I know we can always rollback if anyone blunders, but might it be better to just pick the pages which realistically might be updated? GrimRob (talk) 12:13, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
:I don't think the protection level of Main Page/New pages should be increased to autopatroller protection, as it should remain accessible to all users creating new pages. For the other Main Page templates, I think the current protection levels are generally appropriate, since users can always request changes to protected templates when needed. **St Thomas Aquinas, as quoted in Angels : A Joyous Celebration (1999) by Running Press, p. 121.

*Since a lower power acts in virtue of a higher power, a lower order performs actions proper to a higher order by acting in virtue of that higher power. But the higher orders possess in a more eminent way whatever is proper to the lower orders. Thus all things are in a certain sense common to the various orders. However, they receive their proper names from properties that are characteristic of each order. Nevertheless the lowest order of all retains the common name of angels for itself, for the reason that it acts, as it were, in virtue of all the rest. Furthermore, since the higher naturally influences the lower, and since intellectual action consists in instructing or teaching, the higher angels, in instructing the lower angels, are said to purify, illuminate, and perfect them.
:Higher angels purify the lower angels by removing what is wanting to their knowledge. They illuminate them by fortifying the intellects of the lower angels with their own light, thus enabling them to comprehend higher objects. And higher angels perfect lower angels by guiding them to the perfection of higher knowledge. These three operations pertain to the acquisition of knowledge, as Dionysius remarks.
:This inequality does not prevent all the angels, even the lowest, from seeing the divine essence. Even though each of the blessed spirits sees God in His essence, some may behold Him more perfectly than others. This should be clear from a previous chapter. However, the more perfectly a cause is known, the more numerous are the effects discerned in it. The divine effects which the higher angels perceive in God more clearly than the other angels, constitute the subject matter in which they instruct the lower angels. But higher angels do not instruct lower angels concerning the divine essence, which they all perceive directly.
*President Barack Obama loves to quote the lyrical closing lines of Abraham Lincoln's First Inaugural Address, calling on "the better angels of our nature" to overcome partisan hatreds and political divisions. Obama cited those words in his own inaugural proclamation and rested his hand on Lincoln's Bible when he took the oath of office. He has come back to those angels again and again ever since. … He used the phrase to eulogize Ted Kennedy, to chide a would-be Quran burner in Florida, and to say goodbye to chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Obama, it seems, sees better angels just about everywhere. Even as he traveled in India this week he talked about his efforts to live up to the example of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and, yes, Abraham Lincoln.
But in light of today's real-world politics, Obama should think a little harder about the context in which Lincoln summoned those better angels on March 4, 1861. Led by South Carolina (now home to Sen. Jim DeMint, seven of 33 states had already seceded from the Union to form the Confederacy at that point. … If, in the end, Lincoln did manage to hold the Union together, it was not because of the better angels of human nature, but because he finally found the killer angels among his generals who could, and did, and at enormous cost, crush the secessionists.
In the months between the inauguration and Douglas's early death in June 1861, the "little giant," as he was known, spent many long hours talking to Lincoln about how best to preserve the Union — and compromise wasn't part of the picture. … "You do not know the dishonest purposes of those men as I do," he told Lincoln.
What both of those great politicians understood by then was that there may be better angels in the nature of some people, but there are others who are willing to weaken, even destroy a nation to serve their own self-righteous self-interest, and they will do it in the name of the Constitution. * If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. *We must not suppose that it is the result of chance that a particular duty is assigned to a particular angel; the work of curing and healing, for instance, to Raphael; the supervising of wars to Gabriel; the task of attending to the prayers and supplications of mortals to Michael. We must believe that they have obtained their duties for no other reason except their own individual merits and that they entered upon them as a reward for the zeal and virtue they displayed before the construction of this world; after which event this or that kind of duty was assigned to each member of the order of archangels, while others were counted worthy of being enrolled in the order of angels and to act under this or that archangel, or under this or that leader or chief of his order. All this, as we have said was arranged not by chance or at random, but by the most appropriate and righteous judgment of God, being settled in accordance with merit, God himself deciding and approving. p. 85, Chapter VIII, Angels.
*No angelic office, therefore, exists except as a reward of merit, nor do authorities wield their authority except as a result of their progress, nor do those who are called thrones, that is, authorities for judging and ruling, administer their functions except as a reward of merit, nor do the dominions exercise dominion but by merit; for this supreme and most excellent order of rational creatures in the heavenly places is thus arranged in a glorious variety of offices. p. 89
We (too) shall turn to (confusion) their hearts and their eyes, even as they refused to believe in this in the first instance: We shall leave them in their trespasses, to wander in distraction. Even if We did send unto them angels, and the dead did speak unto them, and We gathered together all things before their very eyes, they are not the ones to believe, unless it is in Allah's plan. But most of them ignore (the truth). Likewise did We make for every Messenger an enemy,- evil ones among men and jinns, inspiring each other with flowery discourses by way of deception. If thy Lord had so planned, they would not have done it: so leave them and their inventions alone. To such (deceit) let the hearts of those incline, who have no faith in the hereafter: let them delight in it, and let them earn from it what they may.
*I saw an angel close by me, on my left side, in bodily form. This I am not accustomed to see, unless very rarely. Though I have visions of angels frequently, yet I see them only by an intellectual vision, such as I have spoken of before.
